Wine tour of Greece

Warmed by the sun you are standing on the porch, all around you there are acres and acres of vineyards. The light breeze brings with it the salty aroma of the sea and the slightest hint of pine trees. You take the glass and take another sip of the exquisitely dry white wine, to taste the riches of the soil around you.

This wine tour of Greece will take you to some of the finest wineries the country has to offer. During the recent years Greek winemaking has entered the new “Greek Wine Renaissance”, as the new generation of winemakers was educated by some of the best schools around the world. This resulted in Greek wines receiving the highest awards in a number of international competitions.

With 6,500 years of tradition one could hardly imagine a country where wine making has developed more traditions than Greece. The ancient Greek civilization even had a god of wine Dionysus and his worship had spread throughout the Mediterranean.

Not only is Greece home to a number of indigenous grape varieties, it is also home to truly unique areas like Santorini, where grapes are grown in the soil full volcanic ash, which calls for special techniques of growing and results in a truly characteristic flavor.

Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. In ancient times, as trade in wine became extensive, it was transported from end to end of the Mediterranean; Greek wine had especially high prestige in Italy under the Roman Empire.
The spread of Greek civilization and their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine, spread Dionysian cults throughout the Mediterranean areas during the period of 1600 BC to the year 1. In Greek mythology, Dionysus is presented as a son of Zeus and the mortal Semele.
Hippocrates used wine for medicinal purposes and readily prescribed it. Greek wines and their varieties were well known and traded throughout the Mediterranean. The Ancient Greeks introduced vines such as Vitis vinifera and made wine in their numerous colonies in Italy, Sicily, southern France, and Spain.
In the Mycenaean period, wine took on greater cultural, religious and economic importance.
Wine was almost always diluted, usually with water (or snow when the wine was to be served cold). The Greeks believed that only barbarians drank unmixed or undiluted wine.
